LANGUAGE CAMP LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
American Village
American Village Camps are the product of a paradox. On one hand, foreign languages are best learned through immersion in a country where the language is spoken. On the other, a new language is more easily learned at a young age. Therein lies the problem: Children who are at the optimum age for learning a new language are too young to travel and live in a foreign country.
American Village Camps are a solution to this issue and allow for children to become completely immersed in a foreign language within their home country. American Village Camps create an environment where it is necessary, natural, and fun to use English.
From the moment they enter the camp, children are required to use a minimum of English and are encouraged to use it as much as possible. Native English speaking camp counselors emphasize the immersion by not speaking the native language of the country to neither the campers nor their parents.
Each day at the American Village is based on a different aspect of North American culture. Among the various themes are Ellis Island Day, Wild West Day, American History Day, and Hollywood Day. These days serve as a thematic thread linking English classes, activities, and evening programs in a fun and practical way.
American Village Camps welcome students of three basic age groups: 8 to 12 or “AmVil Kids”; 12 to 15 or “AmVil Teens”; and 15 to 17 or “AmVil Freshmen”. Camp lengths run from one to two weeks and can be done virtually anytime through out the school year, breaks, and summers. |
