Ukrainians are extremely generous and hospitable. It is explicitly rude in Ukraine to eat in front of someone without offering them food.

Ukrainians are by necessity adaptable. The influence of the Russian Orthodox Church as well as unpredictable climate conditions and many changes in government have created many opportunities for Ukrainians to adjust to change quickly.

Uncomfortable topics are not often discussed openly in Ukraine. Your student might dance around a topic if he/she is worried you might be upset.

Although direct communication is valued in Ukraine, there is also an emphasis placed on delivering information in a sensitive manner. Often, the level of the relationship will determine how direct someone is. Once a relationship has developed, people will then feel more comfortable speaking frankly.

Your Ukrainian student might stand close to you while speaking. Ukrainians tend to stand a little less than an arm’s length distance apart so they won’t need to speak too loudly.
