Colombia

Colombia is one of the most diverse countries in the world. There are 80 indigenous tribes (speaking 64 different languages) within Colombia. In addition, European, Native American, Middle Eastern, and African influences can also be seen throughout the country.

Food is equally diverse, with Spanish, Italian, French, American, and Caribbean influences, along with the traditional style of Native Americans. Colombia is also geographically diverse. The country’s borders contain highlands, rainforests, and tropical grasslands.

Colombians find unity within their families. Family is central in Colombia’s social structure. Extended families generally do not live together under one roof, but it is common for them to live in close proximity and to visit each other frequently. Children often live with their parents until they are married.

The elderly are revered in Colombia for their wisdom and experience. Older members of society are respected, and they are counted on to make important decisions. The oldest in a group will typically be the first to be served at a meal or dinner party.

Fun Fact: 95% of the world’s emeralds come from Colombia.
