About Us

Nacel Open Door, Inc., a nonprofit student exchange organization dedicated to international understanding and language education.

Nacel International is a worldwide federation of organizations, companies, and representatives working together to deliver a culturally-immersive education around the globe. Nacel International is governed by a group of founding partners who work together to ensure standardized quality of programs and provide mutual support worldwide. Nacel Open Door, Inc. (NOD) is one of these founding partner organizations which, since 1957, has promoted programs and opportunities aimed at students who want to broaden their perspective of the world and gain practical experience living, working, and learning in another culture.

NOD has different programs to meet the varying desires of international students who are interested in exploring the world. For students who want a full year of study in another culture, NOD offers academic programs in both public and private schools. For those students more inclined to participate in short-term programs, NOD offers tutorials, homestays, and touring programs.

Nacel Open Door has further diversified its program offerings by expanding into the private school market, developing an online education program with a curriculum that fits the needs of pre-school through high school aged students and increasing NOD's presence in Asia. NOD launched its own high school initiative with schools in the U.S., Korea, Poland, China, the Philippines, France, and Vietnam.

Language acquisition, experiential learning, global exploration, formal college preparatory education, and advanced online learning have become the hallmarks of Nacel.

Structure

The NOD National Office is located in St. Paul, MN. Roughly 25 Coordinators and Regional Managers, assisted by more than 200 Local Representatives, organize the programs on the state and local levels. NOD also employs both full-time and part-time employees to administer programs worldwide.

Objectives

  • To promote international understanding through family homestays, with a focus on culture and language. Nacel Open Door programs should lead participants to discard stereotypes and discover the realities of other cultures and peoples.
  • To increase awareness of the importance of understanding other cultures and to stimulate interest in community support of language and international education.
  • To offer opportunities for language students to improve communication skills and learn first-hand about the culture of countries sharing their language of study.
  • To support foreign language education in American schools by encouraging students to undertake and continue foreign language study. The personal relationships established through participation in Nacel Open Door programs stimulate interest and provide an added dimension to the study of foreign languages and cultures.
  • To provide well-conceived and well-organized programs that offer affordable opportunities to students and families.
  • To make participation a rewarding experience for both students and Host Families by providing solid preparation for participants, organized transportation, and a strong support network.

Philosophy: An Educational Organization

Our world can be made better if today's youth learns to understand and appreciate its cultural and linguistic diversity. Young people benefit from experiences that complement their classroom learning, help them develop an awareness of their role as world citizens, and instill in them an ability to enjoy and adapt to diversity and change. Opportunities to participate in such experiences must be accessible and affordable to as wide range of people as possible.

Immersion is the best way to become acquainted with another country’s people, heritage, and values. Living with a family provides a warm and secure setting for experiencing another culture. Programs without Host Family experiences should involve our students as closely as possible in the culture and life of the country in which they stay.

Communication is the key to understanding culture. Knowledge of language, an eagerness to improve communication skills, and a curiosity for learning permit a higher level of understanding. The friendships that result from the sharing of family and cultural life encourage continued communication, growth, and understanding across borders.
